What Is Coaching?
How many times in your life have you known exactly what to do, but you just didn’t do it? I know for me, there’s no way I could put a number on it.
I know I needed to cook some healthy food today, but I ate out instead.
I know I need to save money, but I’m still gonna buy this.
I know I should get this cleaning done, but I’m gonna watch one more episode.
I know I need to tackle this project, but just a few more tiktoks.
And so on, and so on….
The thing is, that is completely normal behavior. It is how we are wired as human beings. I once heard the reason we procrastinate is because our brain knows exactly how long it takes to complete a task, and we will waste time until we have that much time left. I don’t know if that’s always true, but I’ve certainly seen examples of it happening in my life.
The problem is, I didn’t see those patterns in myself until years after the fact. We don’t always see those patterns in ourselves. Sometimes it takes an outside perspective.
Coaching is that outside perspective. Coaching involves talking through the challenges to find a solution. It involves looking at problems from a different angle than you might be able to look. It involves getting to the root cause of a problem, which could even stem from mindset.
What is mindset? Mindset is what you believe about your identity, your perspective and beliefs about a certain topic, it’s what you know how to do and what you don’t know how to do. It’s what you think is possible and what you think is impossible. Your mindset comes from all of your life experiences up until now.
What does that have to do with coaching? Coaching involves working a lot on your mindset. Coaching is similar to personal training, but still different. A personal trainer shows you how to workout, and what exercises to do. A Coach helps you figure out exactly what you want, formulate a plan, formulate a way to stick to that plan, holds you accountable along the way, and helps you adjust your mindset to make it easier.
When it comes to nutrition coaching, I spend a lot time on mindset. It doesn’t take a lot of time to calculate how much you should be eating, and to select a few key things to eat often. It does, however, take a lot of time to determine the challenges and limiting beliefs holding you back from eating a certain way often enough and for long enough to see progress.
Coaching isn’t magic. Just like any other strategy, working on nutrition through coaching takes effort and consistency. But the advantage is unlike meal plans and group activities, one-on-one coaching gives you the time and attention you need.
What Can Coaching Do For You?
Health coaching is a fast growing industry, reaching a 16 billion dollar market in 2021, and is expected to double by 2031. Why? People are starting to realize prevention really is the best medicine. In-person trainers (especially good ones) may be hard to find depending on where you live. But online coaches can be accessed from anywhere in the world.
So what goals can be reached with coaching?
If there’s a goal, there is probably a coach that specializes in it. Anything from weight loss, to weight gain, to eating habits, to food intolerances, to sport specific nutrition, and the list goes on and on. Whatever you can think of, there’s probably a coach for it, and it isn’t limited to the health industry. I’ve even seen coaches that help you get better at a video game.
I do nutrition coaching with an emphasis on mindset. I coach people who want to lose weight, move better, get stronger, build muscle or get leaner, and have more physical or mental energy. I help people accomplish those things so that they can get back to doing activities they love, so they can play with their kids, so they can move with less aches and pains, and just maybe they’ll live a longer and happier life because of it.
Why Did I Become A Coach?
I’ve already told you that it was to help as many people as possible realize the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. I’ve already told you I want to be as healthy as I can, for as long as I can, to play sports and outdoor activities with my kids as they grow up. But there’s another reason I became a nutrition coach.
I spent two whole years doing what we refer to as “yo-yo dieting.” I would lose a large amount of weight quickly, then slowly gain it back over time. It took two years for me to realize this did more damage than good.
I lost muscle mass, and each time I gained the weight back I had more body fat than before. After I became a coach, I was able to lose 15 lbs very slowly in a much healthier way. Then, I started building muscle and putting on weight. I have experience both losing and gaining weight, and I know what strategies work for both.
I’m passionate about helping people be the best version of themselves in every aspect of life, and to do that it starts with nutrition and exercise.
Next week, I’m going to go over the basics of macronutrients, and talk a little bit about how to use them to improve performance. If you are reading this email, you were entered into a contest to win free coaching for 3 months. Along with next weeks newsletter I will email the winner.
I know you’ll have a great weekend, and I know you’re gonna achieve great things. See you next week!
