Macros, Motivation and Mindset - Why habits matter?

The ATPeebles Nutrition Friday Letter Feb 14th 2025

Why do habits matter so much?

Everything we do in life can be tied to our habits and mindset. Habits shape who we are. They are the result of our past actions, and shape our behaviors. So if you want different results, you should work on your habits.

Whatever area of life you're trying to improve, improving your habits can make a significant difference. And especially with working out or eating healthy, our habits set the stage for how difficult or easy it can be. Work on your habits and being healthier becomes easier. And the easier you can make it to be healthy, the more successful you'll be.

A lot of coaches preach that your results come from your actions, and that you just need more motivation or discipline. But that type of thinking ignores the root cause of those actions.

This is how actions actually work:

Mindset/habit > action > result

Let's use snacking for example:

Don't care about health mindset, built up a habit of snacking > snacks between meals everyday > weight gain or impossible to lose weight

or

"I'm a healthy person" mindset, worked to eliminate snacking habits > rarely snacks > easier to maintain weight or can lose weight when needed

This is why coaching can be so powerful, it can help you get to the root mindsets or habits that you need to change.

You could take certain actions to get certain results. But you'll always be fighting against that action if you don't change the mindset or the habit.

Tiny changes to habits can have a compound effect. And, they can spill over into other habits.

Have you ever noticed it's easier to eat healthy if you're consistently exercising, and vice versa?

Not only can changing one habit bring you success in that area, it can often lead to improvements in other areas. I.e. healthier eating and workout habits might lead to better work habits, better relationship habits, or better money habits.

This is why habits are so powerful, and why it's so important for you to work on them.

Key takeaways:

The fundamentals of habits are

Habits and mindset are a result of the past

Small decisions made consistently that turn into automatic behaviors

You can change your future habit by consistently making small decisions a certain way

Change your habits, being healthy becomes easier

So, how do you really change habits? Find out next Friday.
