Monday Motivation August 26th

Today starts a brand new week, you’ve got this.

Take a second to think about: What are you working on? What goals are you working towards?

But more importantly, why are you doing it?

If you haven’t thought about why you’re doing it, take a minute to think about it now. Write some notes.

Why do I want to accomplish this goal?

Why do I want things to be different?

Why don’t I want things to remain the same?

If you want to stay motivated the best thing you can do is focus on why, and look at the big picture.

Remember, what you want MOST is more important than something trivial that you want now.

One exercise you can do is the Five Why’s exercise. It may take you some time to think about each answer but you start with “Why do I want to do this?” Then you take that answer and ask “Why,” five more times. Here’s an example I did for when I was working on building muscle:

Why do I want to build muscle?

To get bigger and stronger.

Why?

To get more athletic, and to be better at basketball.

Why?

Because I'm competitive and I want to be the best I can be, for as long as I can. And I want to be athletic for as long as possible.

Why?

Because I want to still be able to play sports with my kids as they get older.

Why?

Because I want to experience the memories we will make being active together. I want them to have the memories of us having that time together, and I want them to be active and have a healthy life.

Do you see how that can be so much more motivating than just I want to look better?

This is one of the first things we work on in my coaching programs. When you get in a funk and need to get motivated, you can reflect on your big “why” and find a reason to keep going.

I encourage you to try this now, and if you can’t right now take some time soon to do this. Get a paper and pen and write it down. There’s research that shows writing it down with a pen makes a greater impression on your mind than typing it on a phone.

So, for this week, get a little more focused right now, remember your potential is limitless, and go crush it!
