How To Upgrade Your Mindset So That You Can Stay Committed To Your Goal
Sometimes, all you need to do is make a decision.
The first time I heard this concept in 2021 it sparked something in me. I had spent the first half of the year trying to figure out how I was going to help people with their diet. I had spent so much time on how, how, how. And I was getting nowhere.
That’s when I heard a guest speaker on a podcast named Jason Drees explain how most people approach goals. He said most people decide they want to do something and then they try to figure out how to do it. Sounds logical right? But that’s when he explained the missing piece.
They get stuck in the how and never commit.
Let’s unpack that. You want to know how something works, before you commit to it. And that’s fair, because that’s actually a really smart thing to do most of the time.
You want to know the details of a party and probably even who’s going to be there before you commit to going.
You want to know exactly how a job works before you commit to taking it.
You want to see a house and test drive a car, and see every single aspect of the cost involved before committing to buying it.
You’ll get to know someone for years before committing to marrying them.
All great ideas, and things you should do. I would never tell you not to consider those types of things. But when you’re making health and fitness goals, there are a lot of unknowns. There are a lot of factors influencing your mindset. It isn’t best to plan it out before you commit to your goal. Think about it this way:
Would you plan every detail of the wedding before you’re engaged?
Would you buy all the furniture before you buy the house?
Would you memorize all the company policies before the job is available?
Some things you just don’t know until after you commit.
So when it comes to goals in this space, you can upgrade your mindset by committing first. Make a commitment to yourself that you’re going to do whatever it takes to reach your goal, even if you don’t yet know the plan.
Sometimes all it takes is making a decision. The decision to fully commit. Once you’re fully committed and just start doing something, the plan will fall into place.
Next week, I’ll explain more about how exactly you can commit and what do from there. Because making a decision sounds simple, but there’s more involved to actually being committed.
